Murray’s Shepherd’s Bible: Ephesians 2 With Notes

Most people are not aware that in 1978 Arnold Murray published a bible with commentary called the Shepherd’s Bible. He never finished or published it on a large scale. It was basically an expansion of all the pet doctrines of Christian identity with a few twists and new additions, repackaged for mass consumption.

So successful was the system early on that Murray chose a different route than that of a study bible. Murray decided to leave off finishing that work and base a teaching ministry around it.

In the early 1980’s he invested a large amount of money to initiate a satellite ministry which featured the teaching’s encapsulated in the study bible.

In this article I’m going to present Ephesians chapter 2 from that study bible and have a look at some of his notes. His remarks on the text are in blue, my response in red. One thing we will realize is that Murray’s system didn’t change at all over the years. He found a successful system of false religion and ran with it…

Shepherds Bible. Ephesians Chapter 2

vs. 1 – And you hath He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

** Or, He quickened your mind. Those that stood loyal to Yahveh during the spiritual battle in the world-that-was are born of woman in this world-that-is, without conscious memory of what went before. But these things are caller to your remembrance by people such as myself and other students that teach and reach you because you were chosen before the foundations of the world. We simply call them to your mind.

+ Out the gate notice what Arnold Murray does. Clearly verse one is talking about salvation, regeneration and redemption of sin for all mankind. AM says being quickened has to do with cognizance of what took place in the first earth age by a small group. He equates salvation with this “special insight” into the world that was. In the AM system salvation for “the elect” in this age is earned by past life loyalty in the Katabole. The other “gentiles” come into grace via free will. What he is teaching is pure false religion and heresy.

vs. 2 – Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

** In other words, in times past, you went along with the crowd and you were obeying Satan. Now understand. Up till now Paul has been talking about salvation and redemption through Christ’s blood that was shed for us on the cross. Now here Paul speaks of the prince of the power of the air.

He’s talking about the one that’s going to come back saying he is the Christ. II Thessalonians stipulates that this one, the protecting cherub or Satan, will come back before Jesus, the legitimate Christ, returns. So you see the importance of knowing who you are, who the false Christ is, and which Christ will be the Savior. These things fall into place and come to mind for the elect.

+ The infinite vainglory of man. In the AM system the focus is on the antichrist, great tribulation, Satan and the triumph and exaltation of the “elect”, a small group of people whom Murray has conveniently defined as those who can understand his teaching. The bible teaches that ALL the saints, the redeemed of jew and gentile are the elect.

vs. 3 – Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

** In other words, we were born into this world in ignorance, so that every soul would have a choice, either here or in the millennium. That’s why this world is. It is so all His children that were led astray would have a chance again to love Him from their own heart. You will if your of the elect choose Him now in this world. Or, you will be taught YHVH’s full truth during the millennium and make your choice then. For those who refuse to accept Jesus Christ in the millennium, it’s good-bye.

+ In the AM system everyone receives a second chance in the millennium. And this world is here now because of what happened in the first earth age? RELIGIOUS MADNESS! Murray also equates loving God with salvation – that the sinners love for God is what saves him. This is heresy as well.

vs. 4 – But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith He loved us,

** Because of His mercy, they’re going to know the whole truth. He loved His children, even before this world, and He doesn’t want to destroy any of them.

+ This is more vainglory and delusion. When he says they are going to know the truth he is referring to millennium where deluded chaps will have truth drilled into their heads. But Murray is arrogantly referring to truth as he conceives it. An allusion to the false doctrine of annihilationism is made here as well. God, because of his mercy won’t send anyone to an eternal hell and will give everyone a second chance in the Murray millennial bootcamp.

vs. 5 – Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

** He quickened us how? By letting us know who we are. The greatest gift is knowing who you are and who the children of Lucifer, the Kenites are. Whereby you will know when and where the false Christ will appear. By the grace of Jesus Christ you are saved.

+ This passage is talking about the regeneration that takes place when a sinners transgressions are washed away. Murray reframes it into salvation via discovering who we are. And who is going to teach us that? Murray, that’s who. We are saved by grace through gnostic insight into who the Kenites are, who the elect are and when the false christ appears…

vs. 6 – And hath raised us up together and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

** Or, He raised us to a higher level of thinking. To a higher level of knowledge whereby we would know where and when these things would happen, so that we would not be deceived.

+ And Murray is going to reveal this higher level of knowledge to us – the knowledge of the correct sequence of end time events for the purpose of not being deceived.

vs. 7 – That in the ages to come He might shew the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

** Many people don’t realize the scope of His love that is evidenced by the millennium. If there were, not to he a millennium, no one other than the elect would have an opportunity. The purpose of the millennium, during which it is your destiny to teach, is to give His full truth to those who have been misled. You shall teach and love and guide His people.

+ He turns this into more tripe about his false millennium. The age to come is talking about the eternal state, not the millennium.

vs. 8 – For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

** What does that word faith really mean? In the Greek, it means divine influence on the heart. It isn’t a thing totally of your choice. God brings this divine influence and touches your heart because of your loyalty be fore the foundations of this world. Now understand this, because it clarifies the meaning of grace.

This is not the gift of man. It takes the divine influence of the Spirit to bring about the salvation of the elect. This word is addressed to the elect, or “saints”, to those of His people (Israel) who were led astray by Lucifer and to the ethnos. This is the reason some scholars have trouble with this.

+ Faith presupposes free-will and faith is also equivalent to repentance. Murray alleviates his hearers from the necessity of belief and repentance for salvation. God magically influences them because of their performance in the first earth age rebellion.

Murray talks about teaching on different levels and we see example of it here. That’s just a clever way Murray can have the text mean one absurdity and another absurdity that totally contradicts the first one. He will resort to any kind of lie and device to make the scripture say whatever he needs it to.

vs. 9 – Not of works, lest any man should boost.

** Now this says you are not saved by your good deeds, yet this is what most churches in our day teach. But what does the Word say? We were just told man can’t take any credit but that it is divine influence that saves. Now remember we are talking about this age and salvation prior to the millennium.

In that dispensation, it shall be different but this is addressed to those of the elect that are here on earth now. Let us keep our times and people straight and then it becomes clear and simpler to understand. You do understand if you are elect and you follow Christ your deeds could be none other than good. The point is these works are not your salvation.

+ What church teaches salvation by works? A cult? Most christian churches do not teach that. Murray teaches that man is saved by works in the millennium and that the elect receive divine influence due to first earth age performance. His gospel is a gospel of works through and through.

vs. 10 – For we are His workmanship, created, in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

** You should be able to see there is no choice involved here. God “before ordained” and “unto good works” refers to the fact that you should help His people. He hasn’t chosen you because you are something special. He chose you because you were loyal in that pre-foundation spiritual battle, and it is His purpose that you shall help the rest and lead them.

+ That is a complete butchering of the meaning of that text. And how should those who are ordained demonstrate good works? By spreading Murray’s teaching to all who will listen. To Murray, those are the good works “His people” have been ordained to.

vs. 11 – Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called uncircumcision by that which is called the circumcision in the flesh made by hands;

** Understand this is talking of the lost sheep of Israel and also to the physical ethnos, which means races other than your Nordic, Anglo-Saxon Adamic people.

+ It doesn’t take long for the racist Anglo-Israelist to rear it’s ugly head. See how condescending it is. The “gentiles” are poor saps who are not genetically similar to the British Israelists. Murray’s thinks he’s a Hebrew you see. The reality is that Murray is as gentile as he can be.

vs. 12 – That at this time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, find without God in the world:

** In other words, you didn’t have a chance or a prayer. You had no adoption into Israel. You had nothing. You were Gentiles. All the covenants of the Old Testament were made to Israel. For the deeper students, I add that I realize God made a covenant with the city of Jerusalem, also a covenant with the Kenites that they should never want for a man to lead them but here I’m speaking of the old powerful covenants made with the nation, Israel.

So you understand that Christ is the only door for the ethnos, for the Gentiles. He is the only door for you. He is the only door for everyone. Even the Kenites because He is the fulfillment of the covenant.

+ Sounds like the dual covenant theory for bigoted british-israelists. The gentiles are saved by grace through their free will and the elect (all of whom are Israel of the flesh) are saved by divine persuasion because of how good they were in the age that was.

vs. 13, 14 – But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are mode nigh by the blood of Christ. For He is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

** With His blood, He broke down the middle wall, whereby the ethnos (nations in the Greek, Rev. 21:24-25) if they accept Jesus Christ shall live in their own kingdom with their own rulers or kings and queens. These terms are used in the earthly sense. They shall of course be in YHVH’s kingdom and Jesus Christ shall be the King of kings. This middle wall of partition also means the present division of beliefs. Those who accept Jesus Christ shall be in unison, understanding the full truth at that time.

+ No, those who accept Christ are in unison now. They don’t need to wait for Murray’s teaching in the millennium. He makes an artificial partition wall.

vs. 15 – Having abolished in His flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in Himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

** What ordinances are we talking about? The blood of Christ replaced the blood ordinance. Now for you students who think that He did away with the law, you had better re-read the 5th chapter of Matthew where it says, He didn’t even change a tittle – the smallest letter in the Hebrew alphabet – of the law. It speaks here specifically of the blood sacrifice tying together His total plan of salvation… fulfilling both the Old and the New Testament and bringing salvation to the entire world for all those that would choose it.

vs. 16 – And that He might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

** You call it the body of Christ, the church, Christianity. Call it whatever you want but it’s Jesus Christ. It’s His body, His blood: through Him, the temple is made. It’s not made with hands.

vs. 17 – And come and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.

** Those that were far off, or were not included in the covenants. And those that were nigh, or Israel, His people.

+ Murray teaches British Israelism. He doesn’t believe that he was at one time far off since he believe that he is part of Israel. Reality, Murray is a gentile.

vs. 18 – For through Him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

** Christ is the only door to the Father is what it is saying.

+ Shepherd’s Chapel teaches modalism, that Christ is an office – the same person as God the father.

vs. 19 – Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

** Saints used here again means the pure and holy, or the elect in relationship to the Gentiles. You are in a sense the saints of the Gentiles, in fulfilling that promise made to Abraham that he would be a blessing to all nations. You shall be the teachers of that blessing which is the truth. The word fellow-citizen in the Greek means a fellow Christian or one of the same belief and not necessarily of the same race or color.

+ The saints, the elect are ALL christians both JEW and gentile. It’s simply an elitist, arrogant theology.

vs. 20 – And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner stone;

** Note both the apostles and the prophets speak of Jesus Christ as the chief cornerstone, again tying together both the New and the Old Testament.

+ The prophets spoken of here are the new testament prophets of the early church, the importance of whom he excludes. It is not referring to the OT prophets but rather the NT ones.

vs. 21 – In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

** In other words, it’s the full cycle… the whole building, the whole foundation, and we see the beauty of His salvation unto the whole world including the saints and including the Gentiles.

Gentile christians are saints. Murray’s definition of a saint are the 144,000 that believe as he teaches.

vs. 22 – In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

** Or, the Gentiles, whom I’m teaching, are a part of this, is what he is saying.

In Chapel theology gentile Christians are almost subhuman. He asserts that they are not chosen. The bible says they are.  Murray has invented his own religion.

  1. Are you aware that copying Arnold Murray’s words/ work is illegal? He stated on his show on Shepherd’s Chapel January 11, 2015 that copying anytjing without his permission and putting it on the Internet IS illegal.

    You do not state what your “expertise” is, nor do you sound like a person of good standing in any religious community by virtue of your attacks. I strongly suggest you read Matthew 7:1-5, meditate on the word and send the Pastor a huge apology. He is feeding God’s sheep, IMHO; YOU on the other hand appear to have sour grapes. Suggest you square it away prior to taking Communion again. I don’t have Arnold’s Bible, but his TV show is accurate.

    1. I appreciate your comment, Candace. Would love to see more people weigh in. Pastor Arnold Murray is one of the best pastors I’ve come across. Being from the south, I’ve had my fill of preachers preaching damnation, sermons severely lacking in love. Pastor Murray’s teachings/interpretations were extremely refreshing. And wonderfully convenient by television broadcast since I stopped trying to find churches I ‘fit into'(too much judging & gossip for my sensibilities. From my understanding of the bible – church is anywhere God is, and He is everywhere, even in my living room 😉 ). I would agree the counter interpretation given by the blogger has a bit of hostility(correct word? I don’t want to offend or judge anyone!) I personally could not read past the first couple interpretations. I do however appreciate & applaud anyone offering any interpretation, as they keep me with an open mind(what I appreciated of Murray). But it’s all about intention/motivation for those interpretations. For example, I feel Pastor Murray always came from a place of love & understanding with his words.. I also loved how he knew Hebrew & could further explain the gaps in translation of verses.. May he rest in peace ❤

      1. Pastor Murray, I like. No pastor has taught as he has, chapter by chapter, verse by verse, at length. I like his son also. He increased my interest in the Bible. I have a King James Bible.

  2. I don’t typically respond to this kind of stuff but….here goes. I watch Shepherd’s Chapel, I learn from Shepherd’s Chapel, I study God’s word from my bible and the concordance, I ask God for wisdom and truth. There are no perfect churches, pastors/preachers etc. And there are no perfect parishioners. The further one reads this post the more attacks and outright judgments of AM (Arnold Murray) and his students there are. Had the author of this post simply refuted with evidence and without the snide comments…more of those “cohorts”, as we were referred to, may have been drawn to HIS explanation / interpretation. Personally, I enjoy the way they teach and I feel like my knowledge of Father’s word is stronger every day. It also seems God has blessed that ministry. If Jesus was here do you think he would try to destroy a church that is trying to do the right thing or would he correct them where they err?

    1. Sorry you don’t understand my disdain for this cult. Murray is teaching false doctrine – shouldn’t be the more important issue. Yes, I attack his falsehoods and the bible instructs me to do that. I wish Murray and all his “cohorts” the best, but they are in serious trouble.

  3. Timothy, I’m sorry, but you really sound like a “very unhappy person” to do such a hack job on
    AM. who is “trying” in his way to get us talking and thinking about studying God’s word to learn and research for ourselves in determining what our free will decides, t’s people like you who make me understand there is always someone ready to shoot down anyone whose trys to do anything in the name of love for God! Also, I get the feeling you have big issues with racism.

    1. That’s all window dressing – AM really believed himself to be in possession of truth; Jesus Christ delivered me from this false religion – I am very happy about that. You think that I shouldn’t warn people? As far as racism – there are many of Murray’s tenet’s that are lifted straight from Christian identity. Do the research for yourself to find out whether they and their doctrines were racist.
