How can we save our souls?

Question: “How can we save our souls?” – anonymous

Pretext: Because of our fallen nature people have a sinful bias towards works-based systems of salvation… scripture warns us that our own righteous is no better than a “dirty rag”, that is to say, a menstrual cloth (that is the intended meaning of the text, I’m not trying to be gross). This is a very strong metaphor to describe our righteousness before God. We must despair of own righteousness and receive the one that is by faith in Jesus Christ…

My Answer…

First comprehend what you are being “saved” from – you are being “saved” from the penalty of sin, which spiritual death. Apart from your belief, God is the one who saves your soul once you believe the good news, which is simply the remission of sins through the shedding Jesus Christ’s blood. You are “saved” from the second death through his substitutionary atonement.
